I have read and favorably reviewed some of the author's other work on this site. I have also skipped some of his work. This story falls between the two groups.
There is no question that it has a high quality plot, two well developed characters, and is well written. Under the site's single code scheme, it's a 9 but I can't say I enjoyed the Christmas party. Fair warning -- some may view what follows as a spoiler.
The assigned codes are correct, but there's nc and then there's nc, especially in a realistic story. In "The Old Rectory" and "Bag Lady" the nc is limited or due to an unsympathetic character; coding them Reluctant rather than nc might be reasonable. Here, it is at the center of the story.
I tried to let the male lead off the hook by thinking of him as young, but he's no college freshman. In the States, a graduate student at his stage of a doctorate would be 24 or older, old enough to know better.
The title character made her lack of interest in the things his friends enjoyed known early, clearly, and often. He had no grounds to think she would enjoy herself.
Her weakness was wanting to get away from home so badly that she trusted him against her own judgement. Agreeing to continue with him was a far more valuable present than his gift to her. Even in a story on a site like this, calling the cops would have been more believable. (9/10)
